In December 2024, EuroHPC-JU announced seven sites to host the first “European AI Factories.” These facilities are set to be operational by 2025 and are summarized as follows:1
Country | AI Factory Name | Location / Hosting Entity | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Finland | LUMI AI Factory | CSC’s’ Kajaani facility | New system. |
Germany | HammerHAI | HLRS | New system. Consortium of HLRS, LRZ, GWDG, KIT |
Greece | Pharos | GRNET S.A. in Athens | Will “exploit” DAEDALUS supercomputer |
Italy | IT4LIA | CINECA | New system, 40 EF HPL-MXP. Collab with Austria and Slovenia. |
Luxembourg | L-AI | LuxProvide in Bissen | New system(?) called MeluXina-AI |
Spain | BSC AI Factory | BSC | Upgrading existing MareNostrum 5 and an “AI-optimised platform.” |
Sweden | MIMER | NAISS at Linköping University | ”mid-range AI-dedicated supercomputer that prioritises cloud-style access” |
It’s disappointing to see these AI factories exclusively tied to traditional HPC centers rather than involving industry and hyperscale partners who actually know how AI supercomputers are deployed, operated, and used. My guess is that these supercomputers will wind up being traditional supercomputers with AI branding.
