There is a large supercomputing center in Shenzhen, China that goes by multiple English names:

  • National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen1 (NSCS-SZ2 or NSCC-SZ3)
  • National Supercomputing Shenzhen Center4
  • National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen (NSCS)5
  • Shenzhen Cloud Computing Center5

Its director is Yutong Lu6 and it is home to the LineShine supercomputer.

Name

Its naming is confusing because of the different ways it can be translated. The official name is 国家超级计算深圳中心 which literally translates to “National Supercomputing Shenzhen Center.” However, there are multiple National Supercomputing Centers (NSCCs) across China, and this one is NSCC Shenzhen (or NSCC-SZ). So I think the proper English translation is “National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen.”

The center is also co-branded as 深圳云计算中心, or the Shenzhen Cloud Computing Center. This is the cloud services arm of the same NSCC in Shenzhen.

History

It was established in 2009 by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.

Phase 1

Phase I is located in Xili Lake International Science and Education City.7 Construction began in March 2010 and the center began operating in November 2011.8 This was the site of the Nebulae supercomputer, a Dawning TC3600 with x86 CPUs and Fermi GPUs.

Phase 2

Phase II is located in Guangming Science City and is the site where LineShine is housed.9 Construction began in November 2022, and LineShine was first powered on in December 2025.10
